What screenshots of Windows do you have available?

1. Introduction

Ever since probably around 2000, I've been using Windows 98 as my primary operating system. Even to 2005, I'm still actively using Windows 98. Starting when I actively used a computer, back in like July of 2001, I've started to take screenshots of various errors, glitches, and other weird phenomenon I encounter that, in some cases, I just can't explain. Since this time, I've accumulated over 250 screenshots. All the screenshots I've got take 588 MB of disk space in their base BMP format (as of Dec 2, 2004; BMPs are uncompressed files).

Since I find a few of my screenshots just down right funny, I thought I'd share them with you. I've decided to post only the best of my screenshots I've taken, which is about 40 of them. They are all in PNG format (to retain quality and true color, most are typically only 60 KB or so). Almost every single one of them is uneditted they way they were when I saw them. Those few that have been editted are for privacy reasons (typical of E-mail). Such edits are noticed in the captions as the first sentence and is in bold.

Because I want my website focused toward 800x600 resolution minimum viewing, and that 95% of these screenshots are either 1024x768 or 1152x864, this would cause a scrolling issue for those who view at 800x600 (and somewhat of 1024x768). To solve this, I've shrunk the image down to half of it's dimensions for display on the main page. You can see the full-size version of the image when you click on it.

If you'd like to keep your own "directory" of windows screenshots, it's easy and simple and takes but ten to fifteen seconds to get one and save it. When you encounter something weird, suspicious or you feel as screenshot-worthy, just press the prt scr button on your keyboard located just to the right of the F12 key. When you take a screenshot, open MSPaint, shrink your graphic to a small size (like 1x1), then press control+V to paste the image. Say "yes" to the question that pops up asking you if you want to resize the bitmap because the clipboard contents are bigger than the current. Save the file as whatever you want (create a special directory for these if you want to better organize your files right away) and there you have it. Caution: do not save as JPG as this'll ruin the quality of the screenshot. Screenshots typically compress 95% or better making a 20 MB file just 1 MB in size or smaller, so if you need space, just compress them as a ZIP file or save them as PNG.

2. Screenshots 1 through 10

A black background is shown with default text colors (green, red, and yellow mainly) as from a faulty read of the CSS file.

Screenshot #1 - On rare occasions, I sometimes encounter the text and background coloring changing when it's not supposed to. This is most likely from an error while reading the CSS file attached to the page. Because nothing is defined outside the CSS file, the default colors are used instead.

A popup tip appears in a forum's private messages saying that I've got negative ten new messages. Also, the task bar is somewhat cluttered.

Screenshot #2 - Message subject and user editted out For some reason, one of the two main forums I visit has a bug. If you have new messages, like a read receipt, view it, click back (making sure the page doesn't automatically redownload), check the box then delete it, it'll say that I've got a negative quantity of new messages. This was just the most extreme encounter I've had. I've got -4 once before.

A dictionary search is done with the registered copyright symbol, ®, repeated about 40 times showing that there are 26 results found.

Screenshot #3 - Just to be funny, I copied and pasted a special character only available on the character map. In this case, it was the registered trademark symbol, ®, repeated about 40 or so times. To my surprise, the dictionary website found 26 results, including a medical definition for this (Uh, like that's even a word). This screenshot is one of my all-time top favorites.

My task bar is seriously cluttered with 15 programs running: 4 MSPaint's, 3 IE's, Windows Explorer, Calculator, and many more.

Screenshot #4 - Often, when I'm online, my task bar gets cluttered. At minimum, I have up to five windows: Winamp (or WinDAT (my sound programs)), Notepad (for backing up posts I type in forums just in case something happens and I lose the message), and two IE windows (One is of my frequently accessed objects (which is like book marks and a test page as one), and the other for standard browsing). The other window is my connection status telling me of how many bytes I've downloaded since I connected.

This screenshot is an example of a worst-case scenario. I don't remember what I was doing at this time to have so many windows open, however, as from looking at it, I was probably working on an animation that required a lot of copying and pasting (maybe even because I took a screenshot earlier before which could explain one more; this could explain all those MSPaints running), some of the animations I have use a lot of arithmatic, so that's probably why I have calculator. Character map is what I use to copy and paste special symbols (like that registered trademark symbol in screenshot number 3 just above). I'm not going to explain all of them, however, I do know that at least five of these could get closed.

Weird text shows with a bunch of computer language stuff as from misreading the MySQL database of a forum.

Screenshot #5 - This is a weird phenomenon I encountered in IE. For some reason, none of the forms and smileys and stuff appeared correctly (probably from a faulty internet connection) and was replaced by some random computer code (this resembles programming). So far, I've only had one such encounter in the 3.5 years I've been taking screenshots.

A file properties dialogue is shown saying that just 17 WAV files takes up 5.6 gigs of disk space.

Screenshot #6 - This is a behind-the-scenes look at what I do when I make a custom MP3 CD. In order to get MP3's, I need to convert WAV files. To have 50 loops of a single song seemlessly (with special laps and the such), the WAV files get very long. Because I need high-quality WAV files in order to have better-sounding MP3's, this means the need for a very high sample rate. This, in turn, means HUGE WAV files. In this example, all 17 of these WAV files take up 5.6 GB of disk space. This is a lot compared to my 16 gig hard disk, but since I usually have like 10 gigs remaining or better, this really isn't that much of a worry. All the MP3 files from all these WAV files adds up to about the size of 3/4 of just a single one of those WAV files!

A weird glitch with MSPaint is shown here where a certain part of an image becomes highly skewed and the coloring is morphed with a line of white between each normal pixel.

Screenshot #7 - This is one of the few bugs I've found in MSPaint. Under certain conditions (not yet known), when I call up the stretch/skew command, a strange copying effect occurs that I like the looks of. Remember that features index animated image in category 3? This is what I was doing behind the scenes on making this image. I've redone the image in better color quality, however.

The program, Microsoft Works, is running in the background, but a message is shown saying that the program cannot be started even though it has.

Screenshot #8 - In this one-time-only event, I was trying to start MSWorks and suddenly, I get a notice, after it started saying that I cannot open the program. Well, if the program is running in the background, why did this even pop up? I've only encountered this once in the many times I've run the program.

The task bar shows two windows selected at the same time.

Screenshot #9 - This, too, has been only encountered once. For some odd reason, two windows were active at once. I can't quite explain what went screwy to cause this.

A strange highlighting bug in IE is shown. On the right side is a folder of the floppy disk drive with URL files of the same names as links in a forum.

Screenshot #10 - In this screenshot, there are two things to note. The first is a strange bug I encountered with highlighting moving text in IE. The second is the folder listing on the right. This is what I have going when I'm "disking a disk" or excessively copying unneccessary files to a floppy disk. If you're familiar with forums, you may recognize some of those file names. All I did was just drag links from IE to the floppy's folder, which caused the floppy disk drive to write a 200-byte URL file. This works best with 1.44 MB disks. I tend to have a bunch of 760 KB disks lying around. I loved doing this and I find it very funny. This is also one of my all-time favorite screenshots.
