What photos do you have of your 2008 vacation in Minneapolis, MN for September 19?
Last updated: Sep 28, 2008
Friday, September 19, 2008, was the day I went on the second of two road trips. I went to Duluth on this day where, at the rest stop near it, I got a spectacular scenic view and knew I had to get photos and a video. Upon first arriving, missing a turn causing a long loop-de-loop, we went up to the shoreline of Lake Superior. I stood in the wavy water about a foot deep, but the water was cold. We ate next then, as luck would have it, just as we got out, a huge ship around 800 feet long passed under a rising bridge. I got photos at first, then recorded a video of the entire thing. Some exploration followed then we left to return to the Minneapolis area.
1 Rest stops
Duluth is about 145 miles away from where we were, so one would expect to stop at rest stops. The first isn't much, but the second is a very scenic one, and has two of the three panoramas.

Photo #19-1: Probably about 2/3 of the way to Duluth, (anywhere from 1/2 to 2/3 anyway), there's a rest stop that we stopped at. There's not really much of interest here.

Photo #19-2: Hey trees! Pick up those leaves or you'll pay a $100 fine for littering for each leaf. At least this rest area's yard is in good shape otherwise.

Photo #19-3: When I saw this, I knew I had to get not only photos, but a video. This series of 3 photos offers a panorama of the visible scenic area. Near the horizon is Lake Superior, if you can make it out.

Photo #19-4: With the zoom at 3x, I did another panorama of the same area and this time, I get 5 photos. Now you can really see the details much closer. The lift bridge focused in the last of the videos (number 11) is also visible, in the top of these photos.

Photo #19-5: Is it a coin-operated eye-glass factory? Nope, it's a set of coin-operated binoculars. I never used them as, with a 7 megapixel camera (3072x2304) without zoom, you can exceed that of human vision. Throw in 3x optical zoom and you may match or even exceed these. I've never seen anything like this before, however.

Photo #19-6: Yikes! It's the cops! Those bad guys had better behave and with a scenic rest stop like this, the cops would quite easily watch over the city from here and help catch those baddies.

Photo #19-7: It's one of very few photos of myself from the trip and the only one I want posted. I wanted it so that I got most of the scenic area visible, so I did some math, doing a quick arctangent so the others could take the photo. I got that shirt at the Mall of America 4 days before this.
2 Clouds
Meteorology is my fourth favorite field of science. Astronomy tops the list with physics not that far behind. Geology is a fairly distant third with meteorology a close fourth. As a result, I'm always watching the clouds and monitoring storms.

Photo #19-8: Clouds are a joy to check out. Can you spot the wavy cirrocumulus clouds? How about the the thin cirrostratus clouds? Altostratus clouds are also visible, the other type. All three are shown here together.

Photo #19-9: Ladies and gentlemen, introducing, the world famous surfing dogs! Well, it's a cloud resemblance anyway. This cloud, after another 5 or so minutes looked very much like a pair of dogs on a surf board.
