What are your computer dreams?
Earlier in my past, I wasn't involved with the computer as I didn't find it exciting (since all you could do at the time was type and otherwise couldn't play worthy games). Later on, especially during 1999 to 2000, I gradually got involved and by July 23, 2001, I was heavily involved due to the discovery of internet forums. These dreams revolve around the computer outside games. They, for some odd reason, tend to be disliked and some almost considered as nightmares (such as getting a virus or someone pointing to warez, both of which I have actual dreams of). They are vaguely recalled with around neutral ratings. These dreams are rarely encountered and mainly only occur when something major involving the computer happen for real (such as the case of my computer hard freezing in the BIOS - I got several dreams related to this).
Noteworthy dreams in this category:
9-3: This dream, as of Apr 10, 2007, still bothers me.
9-13: This dream seems more like it could go in the "travel" category than here.

Since I started visiting online forums since around July 23, 2001, I've always wanted to become a moderator in those forums. This dream sort of made that happen, although I still haven't become a mod 3.5 years later. When I first log on to the How Stuff Works forums for the day (as in my dream), I find out that I'm a moderator of the forums. I don't remember much about this dream, unfortunately.

Dream 9-2: 1800 messages in my E-mail

I usually tend to get about 100 to 250 messages per day, but all in my junk mail folder. This dream was where I got 1800 messages without anything in the way of junk mail. Just when I logged into my E-mail (in this dream), I notice right away that I've got 1800 new messages in a special folder I created (one that I don't really have in the real world). I had, like, 6 new messages in the inbox. When I viewed the folder contents containing the 1800 messages, practically all of them dealt with my website in general and were all in the form of questions. Of the 250 MB allotted in hotmail, I've noticed that 4% of that space was used up from all this. I noticed that the sizes of those messages were quite small, like 1, 2, or 3 KB, (most were 2 KB if I remember right). One of the questions, if I can remember right, dealt with something in 1999, but I don't remember what it was even about. I don't know exactly what really even happened in this dream, just a few key features of it. When I checked my E-mail that day, I had my usual amount and nothing really special.
However, even with the 2 MB limit I had before, I still got over 1000 junk mail messages (in just twelve hours!). I actually have a screenshot of this. The main fear I have with Hotmail now allowing me to have 250 MB is the fact that I could, just as in this dream, end up with several thousand junk mail messages and the such. I have no need for this much space (other than the vulnerability of having smart viruses in attachments). I was doing just fine with the 2 MB I had. I wonder if this dream will ever become a reality.

1. (animated) I'm logging into my E-mail. When I log in, I see that I have 1800 new messages in a folder named "my site". I open the folder and see that there were a ton of questions relating to my website, and I mean a ton. This is the only scene recalled from this dream.

Sometimes, those online forums are in my dreams, however, this one is more of a sad story. Although mostly forgotten, this dreams sort of informs me what it's like to be banned from a forum. Although I've never been banned from a forum, sometimes, when the server hosting the forums is acting screwy, I often think that I got banned for some reason and cannot view the forums at all. However, in my dream, the situation was a bit different. Although I don't know how I got banned from the forum in my dream, I can recall that I was only able to just view the forums and just read the posts. I couldn't reply to or make any new ones. I can't recall any changes in the features I get (such as the bio, interests, number of threads to display per page, avatar, etc.) as I don't recall even checking. I don't recall if I was even logged in or otherwise. The details are very vague, unfortunately, so I cannot add anything else about the dream.

Probably originating from browsing through Google Maps, this dream is quite close to resembling it, only with an added twist. Though I don't know the beginning part of the dream, what I can recall starts with me playing around with this very high-tech map. The view was sort of like Google Maps, however, with much closer zoom levels (like two marks closer than the closest available on Google Maps). As I was looking around, I found this interesting-looking area. I saw the "view in 3D" link and clicked it. I then explored around the area, which looked better than even the best 3D games made nowadays. The trees were so full and life-like and the resolution was just intense. It's almost as if you were really there as it looked so life-like. When the view loaded, which was of a view about 100 feet from my house, I began to run along the area at about 5 mph. The dirt path was wet and I was thinking about mud and quicksand. This is about all I can recall about the dream.

Some dreams I don't like at all, although this dream isn't considered close to a nightmare in my standards. I was supposedly in my room which is a lot messier than it is now, and I see my computer. I go to bed and when I wake up (still part of the dream (not physically), my computer is no longer there, the case and the components inside. I don't remember much else about this dream though.

Though somewhat forgotten, especially the beginning, this dream features Gamestudio. At the beginning of the dream, major construction was going on in the house. Some repairmen are moving these large 3/4-inch thick bright white pieces of wood aroound. I've got Out Where the Lake Is playing as well. This is all that I can recall for the beginning.
Much later on in the dream, I'm on the howwhatwhy forums. I see a thread having "Check out this awesome game" or something like that. I click on it and see a link with the poster saying that it was a great game creation program. I click the link and I see a website with the central area, in a column, as the main part of the website. The right side of this column lists programs for sale (about 6 or so are shown on my screen), the top being the one in focus, and the rest unrelated, and has black text on a white background. The left side has a yellowish background, but I can't recall much else. At the top of the right side, I see "A6.20.2 Pro". Because I'm familiar with Gamestudio, this caught my immediate attention. I go back to the howwhatwhy forums and the thread I was just reading and reply, in all caps, "Do not download this! It is a warez copy and illegal!". I put the word "illegal" in bold. I then went to the Gamestudio forums to report about it (to the staff mainly), but the dream ended.
Dream 9-7: A virus and 3DGS beta

This dream comes in two parts. The first is that my dad's computer gets a severe virus. The second involves using the latest beta version of 3DGS. 3DGS was first then my dad's computer was second in the storyline.
First, I was working with 3DGS. I was using a beta version, 6.34.4 I believe. I saw "beta 6.34.4" on the bottom left corner while running the engine. Details on this, however, are very vague.
The second part was with my dad's computer. When starting up, my dad's computer was doing weird things. It, before even loading Windows, was running a virus program to make calls, very long distance international calls. I recall it trying to call Africa. I was quick and cancelled the call. Next, to supposedly reboot into the BIOS, it would go into the BIOS as another program (a "really good" or "better one" as what the screen had on it) was already running and thus was fully unable to do anything. I had to turn off the computer to prevent from getting a huge phone bill.
Recalled scenes:
1. I'm working on my game in 3DGS. I happen to have a beta version, one later than the current public version of 6.31.4. When I run the engine, I recall seeing "beta 6.34.4" on the bottom left corner of the screen. I don't recall anything else, however.
2. I turn on my dad's computer and a strange thing goes on. I see a screen using the 4-bit palette (16 colors) sort of like DOS with lots of dark cyan, greens, and the medium gray colors in particular with some black and light gray text. It was indicating that it was trying to call Africa. I saw that and I hit the cancel button very quickly. I press the reset button on the computer's case.
3. I try to get into the BIOS to set the floppy drive as the first boot device to boot from floppy to work around this, but that didn't work. When I tried to get into the BIOS, it would normally say "preparing to enter setup" or something like that. I was getting a notice, from the best of my knowledge, saying, "Cannot enter setup: a really good program is already running". I don't recall much else, however, short of having to turn off the power.
Dream 9-8: Learning how to use the computer

I'm at school supposedly learning how to use the computer. The basics were covered first such as how to turn on a computer. Then things like what the keyboard and mouse were for. Then, it was announced a field trip was in order, mainly just a long walk.
The area walked through was a mall-like setting. The mall was bright inside and very well-lit. The long, wide hallway was lined with shops and eventually doors further away. The floor was white with 1x1 foot tiles. I glide above everyone in the mall, which was quite crowded (1 human every 4 square yards on average) maintaining a speed of about 20 mph. I maintain it for about ten seconds where I come across the door. While gliding, I feel and hear the air blowing by me. I stop at the computer museum.
This museum has working computers from the early 1990's to modern times and some game console systems mixed into the mess. I recall seeing the Atari, Sega Saturn (I've never actually seen the Sega Saturn), and the original Playstation. I recall one computer running Windows 98. Those who went here were interested in seeing the fastest computer. I didn't have that much interest though. The computers were mainly cases with some objects stacked on top such as hard drive, floppy drives, game console systems, etc.. They weren't stacked much more than 2 feet high above the table though.
When this was over with, about 20 minutes later, we returned to the classroom. I repeated my high-speed gliding just above everyone's head and glid straight back to the classroom. When I got to the stairs leading up to the classroom, I pulled up. I, however, pulled up too steeply and stalled falling down without tilting down, even though I was pitched up at 70°. I land on the stairs just barely after falling about 8 feet then continue on. When back in the class room, the class was dismissed. The dream ends around here.
Dream 9-9: A close call in old times

I don't recall much about this dream, only the ending. I recall doing something on the computer. My parents tell me to turn off the computer to do some housework. I refuse. They begin threatening that they'll take it away or destroy it. I still refuse but take precautions by moving my heavy dresser in front of the door. They start going after me, and by this time, I enhance the chances of saving my computer from them by leaning against the dresser making it harder to open the door. I do recall that they did get in and I then had to carefully keep them away. I keep them away without them doing a single bit of damage, even though they were just a foot away from the monitor.
The computer had a DOS-like display used. The display used 4-bit color. My TV was showing a game, likely Sonic 3 where I'm drowning the fox in the pit of water where an extra life is in Angelisland Zone act 2. The other very likely possibility was Bubsy's fair world. This dream seemed to have taken place when Windows practically wasn't around (unless you consider Windows 3.1). It took place in my old room, of which I last used as my room 2 years ago.
Dream 9-10: E-mails disappeared and spending the night at someone's house
Occurred on Sep 29, 2006; general - 5; nature - 4.5; story - 6; scenery - 5; fun - 5.5; scary - 2; weird - 4; imagery - 30% in tact; dream - 35% in tact
At first, I recall checking my E-mail where I see that my webhost had a small survey going on. I look at it and participate. That all goes normally. I then play my video games, but had a problem. The solution was in my messages in my E-mail. I had a folder called "W-summon" which had this. When I logged on, I noticed that almost every single message was gone. Just those from the current day actually remained. That was that survey. I thought I have been tricked or hijacked. I looked at the message header stuff. This contains details about where the message came from and stuff. I found it to be legitimate as far as I could tell.
I recall visiting someone's house (a friend?) and having to spend the night. They had their NES hooked up (a very old console system from the late 1980's). The game played was somewhat like an RPG. It was 2D, a top down game, and the level design was also similar. The scene was inside a house with blue-cyan floors. The way monsters were encountered (at least based on that of Final Fantasy 1), moving between floors, and overall looks made it seem much like that of an RPG. There were marbles being battled, defeated simply by walking over them. They came from the various holes. One such hole had a fireman's pole to go down by. Another, one never used but not easily accessible, had a ladder. I didn't play the game, but I watched others play it. There were some regular enemies encountered as well fought in a way much like that of FF1. I don't recall anything further until the point I woke up.
When I woke up after going to bed, the first recalled scene is where I'm eating "chicken noodle soup" served in a plate rather than a bowl. Although a bit slow in terms of my normal eating speed (about 2/3 as fast), I ate 90% of it. I was to return home and I checked my E-mail from within the house I visitted. The messages that were gone in my E-mail were back again, including those 2 folders. The dream ended shortly after this.
